Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
