The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
